A wonderfully French little moment of theater, satire, and people-watching.
This framed hand-colored lithograph reproduces Honoré Daumier’s “Fesant les délices du public de Carpentras,” depicting a gentleman seated in a theater box, opera glasses raised as he watches a ballerina perform.
The scene is unmistakably Daumier: observant, humorous, and full of the exaggerated human character that made him one of the great social satirists of 19th-century France.
The original composition dates to 1852 and belongs to Daumier’s Croquis musicaux series. Musée Carnavalet records the original as plate 16 from a seventeen-image series published in La Caricature.
This example is a later periodical illustration reprint, rendered as a lithograph with crayon-like linework and added hand coloring. It is presented behind a linen-wrapped mat in a gilt-finished frame.
A beautiful piece for a gallery wall, library, powder room, office, or anywhere that could use a little French wit.
