French drama—with a very good sense of humor.

This framed hand-colored lithograph after Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) depicts two figures caught in an animated theatrical or operatic performance, rendered with the exaggerated gesture and wonderfully expressive character associated with Daumier’s celebrated social satire.

The auction catalog identifies the work as “If You Don’t Stop Immediately.” The image bears the characters “h. D.” at the lower left and the numeral 369 at the lower right.

This example is a periodical illustration reprint, produced as a lithograph with fine crayon-like linework and added hand coloring. It is presented behind a linen-wrapped mat in a matching gilt-finished frame.

The combination of expressive figures, muted color, and ornate framing makes it particularly good mixed into a collected gallery wall—especially alongside more contemporary art.

French, funny, and a little theatrical. Exactly what a wall needs sometimes.
