Antique English Barley-Twist Side Table with Scalloped Top, c. 1900

A small table with very good manners.

This antique English occasional table dates to the early 20th century and combines a beautifully figured hardwood top with one of the most recognizable details of the Edwardian period: hand-turned barley-twist legs.

The top has a softly scalloped and beveled edge, giving the piece a lighter, more decorative silhouette than a standard square side table. Beneath it, a simple apron keeps the profile clean while four spiral-turned legs lead down to block sections, stretcher supports and rounded turned feet.

The warm brown finish has developed the kind of patina that only comes with age, with visible wear, tonal variation and surface marks that give the wood depth rather than making it feel overly polished.

At approximately 26 inches high, it works beautifully as an occasional table, small entry table, bedside table, drink table or compact lamp table.

Traditional English construction, but surprisingly easy to use in a more modern room.

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use.

The wood shows surface scratches, rubbing, small marks, finish variation and general patina throughout.

The top retains visible age-related wear and tonal variation, particularly along the scalloped edge.

The legs, stretcher base and feet show expected wear consistent with approximately 100+ years of use.

The table remains structurally sound and presents beautifully.

This is one of those pieces that makes me want people to stop buying little new side tables.

The barley-twist legs are decorative without feeling fussy, the scalloped top gives it just enough movement, and the scale is genuinely useful.

Next to a sofa, beside a bed, in an entry, under a lamp — it is the kind of antique that actually earns its place.

And the patina is doing exactly what it should be doing.
