Antique French Carved Wood Beveled Mirror, c. 1880–1900

Small in scale. Very much not small in character.

Sourced in France, this petite antique mirror dates to the late 19th century and has all the details we look for in a genuinely old piece: substantial wood construction, a traditional nailed wooden back, hand-worked decorative carving and beautifully aged beveled glass.

The rectangular frame is carved with a delicate repeating floral motif and layered linear moldings, giving it just enough ornament without overwhelming its wonderfully simple proportions. The warm brown wood has darkened naturally over time, with an irregular patina that only comes from age.

Most importantly, the mirror plate has a wide hand-finished-looking bevel around the perimeter. The glass has developed scattered spotting, surface marks and slight haziness over more than a century, softening the reflection in the very particular way antique mirror glass does.

At just 13 inches tall, it is a fantastic layering piece: tuck it into a gallery wall, lean it on a bathroom shelf, place it above a small bedside table or mix it among ceramics and artwork on a console.

CONDITION

Good antique condition consistent with approximately 125+ years of age.

The wooden frame shows scratches, rubbing, small losses, darkening and surface variation throughout.

The mirror plate has visible age-related spotting, scratching, light cloudiness and silvering imperfections.

The wooden back and nailed construction show significant age and wear consistent with traditional antique manufacture.

No attempt has been made to remove the piece's original patina.
