A spectacular antique brass fireplace screen in the form of a peacock with its tail in full display — equal parts functional object and sculpture.
The screen unfolds fan by fan to create a dramatic semicircle of individually articulated brass feathers, transforming the peacock from a remarkably compact object into a statement piece more than three and a half feet wide.
Hand-cast in brass and left with its original aged patina, the surface moves between warm gold, deep bronze and darker oxidized tones that emphasize the relief and detailing of each feather.
When not in use, the entire fan folds neatly behind the peacock body, reducing the screen to only about seven inches wide. It’s a wonderfully clever piece of early-20th-century design: theatrical when open, almost disappearing when closed.
Chairish identifies the piece as Italian and dates it to the 1920s. One screw has been replaced; otherwise, the screen remains in original condition with its beautifully developed patina intact.
A fireplace accessory for people who have no interest in boring fireplace accessories.
