French Neoclassical Style Gilt Brass Folding Fan Fire Screen

A beautifully ornate antique-style gilt brass fireplace screen with the kind of detail that makes a fireplace feel finished even when it isn’t lit.

Designed as a folding fan, nine pierced brass blades open from a sculptural central pedestal to create a wide semicircular screen. When closed, the entire piece collapses into a surprisingly narrow decorative form — functional, clever and very elegant.

The central housing is the star: a classical profile cameo framed by floral swags and laurel motifs, topped with an urn finial and grounded by a richly scrolled base. The pierced blades add pattern and lightness, while the aged gilt brass keeps the piece warm rather than overly polished.

The auction catalog describes it as 19th-century French Neoclassical style. The form also draws heavily from Louis XVI and Rococo revival vocabulary, making it especially good in Spanish Modern, European, traditional or collected interiors where one ornate antique element can do a lot of work.

Beautiful in front of a working fireplace, but honestly just as good as sculpture.
