Gien France Provence Dinner Plate — Fishing Harbor or Lavender Fields

A little piece of Provence for the table.

These beautiful Gien France Provence dinner plates capture two of the things southern France does particularly well: lavender fields and fishing ports overflowing with produce.

Designed by Isabelle Barthel for Faïencerie de Gien, each plate is illustrated almost like a travel sketch, with delicate watercolor-style landscapes surrounded by regional botanicals and little details from Provençal life.

LAVENDER FIELDS

Rows of deep purple lavender stretch across the landscape toward a traditional stone farmhouse, framed by olive branches, herbs, and a woven basket filled with freshly cut lavender.

It feels like late summer in Provence condensed onto a plate.

FISHING HARBOR

A wonderfully detailed Mediterranean harbor scene with traditional fishing boats floating in clear blue water beneath pale limestone cliffs.

Fishing nets, shellfish, coastal plants, and maritime details frame the scene, giving the plate the feeling of a little port somewhere along the Provençal coast.

Blue, cream, soft yellow, and touches of terracotta make this one especially beautiful mixed into a relaxed summer table.

At approximately 9.75 inches across, these are substantial dinner-sized plates, but the illustrated scenes also make them beautiful displayed upright on open shelving or a plate wall.

Use them traditionally for lunch or dinner, mix them into an intentionally mismatched French table, or let each one function as a little piece of decorative art.

I bought a set of 4. These are the two survivors.

One for the lavender fields, one for the fisherman harbor.

I love them mixed into a table rather than treated like a formal matching dinner service — old linen, mismatched glasses, something good to eat, and absolutely no need for everything to coordinate.
