A strawberry that opens up to hide the good stuff. Very Portuguese, very unnecessary, very good.

This vintage Bordallo Pinheiro covered ceramic jar is sculpted entirely in the form of a ripe strawberry, with a richly textured red body, dimensional seeds, and overlapping green leaves wrapping around the fruit.

The fitted lid continues the strawberry form and is topped with a petite berry finial surrounded by molded leaves, turning an everyday little storage vessel into a tiny piece of ceramic sculpture.

Remove the lid and the interior is finished in a deep glossy berry-red glaze. The small scale makes it perfect as a sugar bowl, jam or condiment pot, candy dish, jewelry holder, or simply as a decorative object tucked into a collected kitchen or bookshelf.

The underside carries the Bordallo Pinheiro Portugal / Made in Portugal factory mark.

This is exactly what Bordallo does best: taking something completely ordinary from nature and giving it enough personality that suddenly you need a ceramic strawberry on your shelf.

DIMENSIONS

The original seller does not provide measurements.

Based on the photographs, this is a petite covered jar that fits comfortably in one hand. I would measure the actual piece once it arrives before publishing exact dimensions rather than guessing.

CONDITION

Very good pre-owned vintage condition overall.

1 small chip on the top part of the lid.

Minor glaze variation, surface wear, or production irregularities may be present and are consistent with vintage earthenware.

Please review all photographs closely for condition.

DĒSSO NOTE

It is a tiny ceramic strawberry with a lid.

I’m not going to pretend we need a more sophisticated reason.

Put sugar in it. Put rings in it. Put absolutely nothing in it and leave it on a shelf looking fabulous.
