Vintage Swedish Walnut Secretary Chiffonier — c. 1930s

A beautifully proportioned Swedish walnut secretary chiffonier dating to the 1930s, combining the elegance of a tall chest with the practicality of a concealed writing desk.

Crafted in warm walnut, the piece reflects the transition between traditional European cabinetmaking and the cleaner lines emerging in Scandinavian design during the interwar period.

The secretary format makes it especially useful: closed, it reads as an elegant piece of storage furniture; opened, it becomes a compact writing or laptop surface.

It is exactly the kind of antique furniture that works surprisingly well in a modern home — handsome enough for a living room or bedroom, practical enough for an office, and narrow enough to function where a full-size desk might feel too heavy.

The auction house attributed the piece to Sweden, circa 1930s.

DIMENSIONS

Exact dimensions to be confirmed before publishing.

The LiveAuctioneers post-sale page for this specific lot no longer exposes its original measurements, and I would not copy the 52.5" × 47.75" × 21" measurements from the sister lot, since that was a separate piece from the same auction.

CONDITION

Vintage condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with a piece approaching 100 years old.

Expect surface marks, scratches, finish variation and minor veneer wear consistent with age and use. Please refer closely to the photographs for the condition of this specific piece.

I would avoid adding any mention of repaired feet or specific veneer loss until we confirm it from your lot photographs — those issues belonged to the sister secretary in the same auction, not necessarily this one.

DĒSSO NOTE

This is the kind of furniture we love because it earns its square footage.

Beautiful walnut cabinet by day, secret little desk when you need it. We’d style it with one oversized lamp, a sculptural bowl and absolutely nothing else — the wood already does enough.
