Vintage Tortoiseshell Bamboo Magazine Rack with Arched Handle

A beautifully sculptural vintage bamboo magazine rack with one very good curve.

The dramatically arched handle rises above a low slatted body, giving this practical little piece a surprisingly elegant silhouette. Natural tiger and tortoiseshell variations run throughout the bamboo, creating layers of honey, caramel and deep brown that have only become richer with age.

Vertical bamboo slats hold magazines, books or records neatly in place, while crossed supports at the base and traditional wrapped rattan joints add both structure and wonderful handmade detail.

The warm burnt finish was created through the selective scorching often seen in vintage tiger bamboo furniture and accessories, giving the surface its distinctive mottled appearance.

Perfect beside a reading chair, sofa or bedside table — useful enough to earn its place, beautiful enough to leave empty.

A very good example of the tropical modern pieces produced across Asia for Western interiors during the mid-20th century.
